Are AirBnBs Safe?

2026 is already a year where safety is becoming one of the major concerns when planning travel. Between the news regarding cartels in Mexico or the latest turmoil in the Middle East, safety is back being one of the foremost prerequisites when thinking about where to travel to.

Bur what about safety in general? AirBnBs have become a go-to for the more budget minded traveler. But are they safe? Statistics show, in general, that they are safe. But all AirBnBs are not created equal. And that really is the issue with them. There is no consistency. One AirBnB in a place like Nashville could have been awesome while another in Paris France was awful. We, as travel professionals, do not book AirBnBs for our clients due to the lack of control and standards.

Here are our top concerns for those looking to always book an AirBnB:

  • Pictures can lie. Haven't we all seen it? You look online at a place and see the pictures and they are absolutely gorgeous. Then you get there and you figure out that the professional photographer made sure to not show you certain angles or areas or they photoshopped the pictures to the point they look nothing like reality.

  • Lack of privacy. Even though AirBnB has implemented new rules this year banning all cameras from being placed inside the home, those who want to do things illegally will still do so. Who wants to have to search their rental home for hidden cameras?

  • Unseen safety hazards. Hotels and Resorts have minumum safety standards that they must meet. No one controls individual AirBnBs. They are not routinely inspected for any fire hazards or other safety concerns.

  • Lack of security. Hotels have management and security staff on hand at all times. That is not the case in an AirBnB. This is a huge factor when booking AirBnBs in foreign countries where you have no real idea of the crime rates in certain areas or neighborhoods. You are pretty much left on your own.

Even though statistically AirBnBs seem to be as safe as hotels, there are inherent risks when booking someone's individual home, as we just pointed out. Does this mean you should never book a vacation home rental? No, that is not what we are saying. But did you know there are better alternatives when it comes to booking a vacation home? As travel professionals, we have access to villas and vacation homes around the world that are vetted and inspected by our suppliers before they are ever offered for rent. This added vetting can mean the difference between a great memorable vacation and a horrible, we will never forget, nightmare of a vacation.

So while there are many great reviews out there for some AirBnB homes, is it worth risking an entire vacation by renting one just because it's cheaper? What are your experiences with AirBnB? Any success or nightmore stories to share? We would love to hear from you.
